'Is This a Joke?’: Man Orders $640 Trump Watch, Shocked by What He Receives Instead

Have you ever tried to do something sweet for someone you love, only for it to go hilariously wrong?

That’s exactly what happened to Tim Petit from Rhode Island. He thought he was getting his wife Melanie a rare, elegant gift: A $640 pink “Inauguration First Lady” watch from the website ‘Get Trump Watches.’

What he got instead was a watch that boldly read “RUMP” on the face. Yes, the ‘T’ was missing, and the internet hasn’t stopped laughing since.

Tim’s intentions were heartfelt. “I wanted to do a special thing for her,” he said.

The watch was marketed as a limited edition collectible, one of just 250 pieces, said to bring “prosperity and love” and even enhance creativity and intuition.

Instead, it brought a storm of embarrassment and a lesson in online shopping trust. When the package arrived and Melanie opened it, her reaction was anything but joyous.

“How could they process this and go through something without checking their work?” she asked, visibly emotional. The typo hit her harder than expected, even bringing her to tears.

At first, the couple’s complaints to the seller were ignored. But once local news station WJAR got involved, the company suddenly remembered how customer service works.

They replaced the watch and offered an $800 coupon as a peace offering, along with a public apology. While that sounds like a decent recovery, many online believe it shouldn’t have come to this in the first place.

It’s also worth noting, Trump Watches is not affiliated with Donald Trump or his organization. The company uses his name and image under a paid licensing agreement, which many people might not realize. So, while it might look official, it’s more of a branding move than a product of presidential prestige.

Online reactions were brutally funny and, at times, painfully honest.

One person joked, “That watch has the integrity of Donald Trump alright!”

Another quipped, “The ‘T’ was tariffed.”

Others simply called the product “cheap looking,” with one saying, “If he paid $64, maybe. But $640? They should’ve sent all 250.”

But the deeper story here is about more than just a typo. It’s about trust, branding, and the illusion of value.

In a world where people are struggling to pay rent or buy groceries, someone spending $640 on a watch that looks like it came out of a vending machine just hits differently.

That’s not to shame Tim — his gesture came from love. But it does make you wonder how often we’re all sold on appearances or political figures.

So what’s the money story here?

It’s this: Perceived value is powerful, but dangerous.

Tim bought more than a watch. He bought into a brand, a story, an identity. He thought he was buying a symbol of something greater. But that’s the thing about branding. It can sometimes sell us fantasy at premium prices.

Always read the fine print, and don’t assume that a famous name equals high quality.

Why did this happen?

It was likely a mix of poor quality control and cheap outsourcing, maybe even a rushed production cycle. They probably didn’t think anyone would notice or care.

But Tim…he believed in the brand image and wanted something meaningful. Each thought they were doing something right. Still, this whole story feels like a comedy sketch about misplaced priorities to the average person scraping by.

Businesses must be transparent and care about quality, and we, the consumers, need to do our research and think twice before trusting flashy ads over common sense.
